Quentin Grimes Helps Detroit Pistons Tie Odd Record
USA Today

The Detroit Pistons tied a franchise record on Saturday night in their game against the Orlando Magic.

As the team cleared its new trade acquisition, Quentin Grimes became the 27th player to wear a Pistons uniform this season.

According to Bally Sports Detroit’s Johnny Kane, that marks a record for the team, tying one that was previously set over the course of the pandemic, which featured teams having players on and off the injury report due to health and safety protocols.

Injuries always play a part in changes on a nightly basis, but the Pistons shook up the roster multiple times this season, which caused them to make personnel changes.

In November, Detroit signed Kevin Knox. Then, in mid-January, they acquired Mike Muscala and Danilo Gallinari. Nearly a month later, the Pistons made multiple trades to land Shake Milton, Troy Brown, Simone Fontecchio, Malachi Flynn, Evan Fournier, and Grimes. After the trade deadline went into place, the Pistons added Tosan Evbuomwan to a 10-day contract.

When Grimes suited up on Saturday night, he checked in for 26 minutes off the bench. It was his first set of action since the New York Knicks played the Utah Jazz on January 30.

During that time, he had some rust from the field, knocking down just two of his eight shots. Five of those attempts came from beyond the arc. Grimes wrapped up his Pistons debut with five points, two rebounds, and four assists.

While Grimes was the final trade piece that stuck around to make his debut with the Pistons this year, that doesn’t mean the opportunity to break the franchise record by having a 28th player suit up is out of the question.

Recently, the Pistons added G League player Buddy Boeheim to the roster. While he’s been on an assignment with the Cruise, there’s a chance he could see some action down the stretch, leaving the door open for the record to be broken.
