Steelers Captain Cam Heyward Won’t Report To OTA’s Because He Wants A New Contract
Kirby Leei-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers have enjoyed a successful offseason, but they encountered a setback on Wednesday. The team's captain, Cam Heyward, will not be reporting to the Organized Team Activities (OTAs).

This development was reported by ESPN's Brooke Pryor, highlighting a potential challenge for the team as they continue their preparations for the upcoming season.

"Steelers defensive lineman and reigning Walter Payton Man of the Year Cameron Heyward has not attended voluntary offseason workouts and does not plan to attend OTAs as he seeks a contract extension, sources told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. Heyward, set to become a free agent in 2025, has never missed an offseason program."

Heyward, the Steelers' veteran captain, faced a challenging season last year as his productivity significantly declined due to injuries. Now at 35, and contending with the inevitable effects of aging, Heyward's decision not to report to Organized Team Activities (OTAs) poses a complex situation for the Steelers.

There has been speculation that Heyward may need to consider a pay cut, as he is slated to have a $22 million cap hit in 2024, making it the second-highest on the Steelers roster. Given his age and the physical toll of recent injuries, some argue that it may not be financially prudent to allocate such a significant portion of the salary cap to him. However, Heyward has expressed frustration with this idea, emphasizing that he has worked diligently throughout his career and deserves his current compensation.

The situation is complex, reflecting the often harsh realities of NFL economics. While Heyard's dedication and performance are undeniable, the Steelers must also consider the broader impact of his salary on the team's financial flexibility and overall roster management.

This scenario underscores the delicate balance teams must strike between valuing veteran contributions and maintaining fiscal responsibility. As discussions continue, both parties are confronted with the challenging business decisions that define the professional sports landscape.

Steelers' Cam Heyward May Not Be A Steeler In 2024

The prospect of Heyward playing for a team other than Pittsburgh, where he has spent his entire career, is a startling consideration. However, this could become a possibility if he maintains his stance on not reporting. While the Steelers hold Heyward in high regard, they must also navigate the realities of the NFL as a business, carefully managing their resources without compromising their financial strategy.
